TMK was founded in 1975 by a group of people who migrated from Singapore, Malaysia and india and settled in London for the purpose of employment and a desire to provide a better life for their families. The primary aim of the association was to maintain our tradition, culture and unity amongst the tamil community and most importantly teach Tamil language to the next generation so they were able to communicate in their mother tongue.
It was this passion and motivation that led to the inception of Thiruvalluvar Tamil School. This started with 5 students and one very obliging volunteer who agreed to teach. The school has now grown in leaps and bounds and is now considered the longest established school in the UK. We have had student numbers reaching over 250. Starting from preschool to GCSE O &A level standard (Cambridge Board) . The school prides itself in the outstanding GCSE O’level and A’ Level results which not only helps the student identify culturally amongst their community but also provides an added qualification when applying for university and higher educational establishments. Our school has helped towards producing many graduates who are now working and giving back to the community with their varied skill sets. Our teachers are vastly experienced with the Cambridge board examination syllabus which is reflected in our 100% success rate.
The school organises Thirukurral, Speech and Song competitionsduring the year and an annual Pongal Vizha, Prize giving day and Sports day.
Along with the Tamil School we also run a tamil literary book club and tamil women’s group. The former allows interested members to come and discuss in a social setting the many acclaimed literature scripts that have been written in history. The latter helps ladies to network and learn new skills, it especially reaches out to the elderly population who often feel isolated to join and enjoy some company.
We also support many charities and offer our support to both communities in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka when they faced natural disasters such as the Tsunami.
TMK has been working towards progressing the Tamil culture and community for nearly half a century and we are looking forward to its 50th year and celebrating our Golden Jubilee and many many more years of success.
